I was trying to enable Wordpress to display Asian characters on EMiNA’s blog, and I found out that this is easily done. Just open your wp-config.php and change a few lines. Look for these two lines;
You can either delete them or put a ‘//’ before each line [turning them into comments]. I downloaded the config.php, made the changes and it worked for EMiNA. So I figured I’d do the same for this blog. Being the careless doofus that I was, I simply uploaded EMiNA’s config.php to this blog, without creating a backup for this one.
It’s been almost over a year since the last theme, and I’ve been using a white-on-black theme since the day I started blogging. I figured it’s about time to shed away the monochrome feel, bust open the windows, tear down the walls and go wide open. I hereby welcome you to The Silent Room’s new look: The Open Room.
As you can see, this layout is greatly inspired by the clarity of off-white paint and the neutrality of the Helvetica. I should mention that documentary on the typeface also played a big part in the inspiration of this design. As for the header and footer images, well, they come from the very beautiful film 5 Centimeters Per Second by Makoto Shinkai.
This layout lacks a sidebar, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. A sidebar may be a convenient thing for a blog to have, but recently, I feel that it’s proving to be rather redundant. Besides, I kind of enjoy being able to write in large wide spaces. I used to have a theme with a fluid width, but it’s quite hard to do any formatting with that.
I must thank Ross for taking the time to code this layout [although he's been very busy]. So, I hope you like the new look, and routine blogging will continue as soon as I’m free from other commitments :)
Small Talk: [Mini update: 11th July] I’ll be at the Bon Odori festival in Shah Alam tomorrow. Stop by the EMiNA picnic camp [near the huge Panasonic clock] and say hi! Hopefully I’ll be able to shoot more pictars this time around XD
Osaka’s yawn is my new desktop of the month. Wai.
A lot of times people have confronted and voiced their doubts about my tastes in entertainment. The usual conversations would involve a typical, almost predictable set of accusing remarks and questions. This concerns a broad scope of media, actually.
Games, music, movies, books and of course, the biggest fish in my pond, anime. Allow me to explain my habits for entertainment a little bit. Given that a person would spend about 2-3 hours consuming different types of media daily, let’s do some math.
Let’s say I spend about 8-10 hours per day occupying myself with let’s say an average of 4 different types of entertainment. Think of it as reaching into a black bag filled with lots of coloured balls.
Okay, since the past three posts or so, some readers have notified me that they have been unable to post comments. Whenever they tried, they get redirected to a weird URL which returns a 404. I spent a few nights trying to figure out what the hell went wrong, but at one point I just gave up and decided to create a new blog, and import the old posts there.
Unfortunately, there were some setbacks. I’ve been blogging on Wordpress 2.0, and never bothered to upgrade. So what happened was, after creating the new blog using Wordpress 2.5 [thank god BlogAsian had installed the latest Fantastico], I tried to import the database from the old blog. However, things didn’t go as easily as I had thought.
Yay! It’s going to be a brand new blogging year, and I intend to celebrate it by launching a brand new blog layout!
That’s right, by the end of May 2007, The Silent Room will officially celebrate it’s third anniversary. We [my blog, its readers, and myself] have grown and gone through so many things together and it has been such a wonderful experience. We’ve come a long way and I hope for greater returns to come :D
From Blogspot.com to dotNET, and later to dotORG and now we’re finally at dotCOM [and will remain so, all paid for until 2015, w00t!]. This blog has seen several facelifts, server and domain transfers after the initial migration from being hosted at Blogger to server-side hosting by Blogasian [awesome dudes!) and now running proudly on Wordpress!
To commemorate the third anniversary of this blog, I have made this layout, The Glass Room as part of a long-overdue blog website revamp (Yes, we’re MORE than just a blog, now!). Past layouts have been “Monochrome” (those who have been around since my Blogspot days might remember) and “inVersion” which I have used over the past year or so.
Also part of the revamp is that I have cleaned up some codes. I have also consolidated all my fiction works in one page. The Silentscope photoblog now runs on Wordpress, and no longer an image gallery software like before (I’ll make a new header for it, soon). I’ll be reworking the Art Gallery and Eggheads page as well, but that might take a while.
Many thanks go out to Fird and DJ Redzuan for helping me figure out stuff! So, here’s the burning question. Do you like the new, shiny look?
I have spent three nights getting this layout to work on Firefox. It looks a bit funny in Opera, and it’s a complete mess in Internet Explorer. I’m not quite ready to make any fixes for IE yet, mostly because I’m not really sure about how I should go about it. I’m still very much a n00b when it comes to coding web pages, so if you’re kind enough to lend me your skills and help me fix this so it’s up to current standards and cross-browser compatible please, please help me out here.
I’ll buy you dinner. If you’re also a super hot chick needing some hot loving, I’ll even take you to a movie >:D
