Between Supremacy and Inferiority
April 12th, 2010Evidently I’m surrounded by Malays who are in denial. Either that, or Malays who refuse to ease their grip and release their hands from their crotches.
…
Oh, sorry. I meant, crutches. Economic crutches. You know, the bumi status, privileges, subsidies, quotas, the whole shebang.
Quoting from his biography, Tun Dr Ismail likened the NEP to a handicap which “will enable them to be good players, as in golf, and in time the handicap will be removed. The Malays must not think of these privileges as permanent: for then, they will not put effort into their tasks. In fact, it is an insult for the Malays to be getting these privileges.”
Right. So where was I?
Okay, so the story is about the proposal of an Interfaith Committee, which would allow an official, formal platform for all religions to come together peacefully, to understand and learn more about each other by attaining a common ground from which all parties can speak with an equal voice.

I don’t know about you, but if this Committee lets people understand that my religion isn’t really the atrocity and insult to humanity that it has been portrayed to be – hell, I’m all for it! More people should come and learn more about what my religion is all about, because as it is, a lot of people are portraying my religion the wrong way. I’m extremely confident that I’m not the only one who feels the same way about this – regardless of his/her creed.
I totally support a platform that allows people to understand my religion better. I mean, isn’t that the fundamental concept behind dakwah? I am also in favor of a platform that lets me understand other religions better, so that I don’t offend them, or accidentally do some crazy stunt. I don’t want shit happening simply because I misunderstood things and thought I was being nice.
You know, dumb shit like, oh you like warmth right, here lemme set your church on fire!
[/blackComedian]
And yet some people STILL have some kind of inferiority complex, like this dumb old faggot right here.
“We understand that this committee is formed to allow religious leaders to share a table to discuss and exchange ideas but we do not want to put Islam on the same level as other religions.”
- Datuk Ibrahim Ali
Intolerable!! What an atrocity it is for us Muslims to lower ourselves to the level of these other ground-scraping, bottom-feeding religious groups. Who do these people think they are that they can speak on equal ground with us Muslims! This is blasphemy, THIS IS MADNESS!
Wait, I think I’ve heard someone else who said that line before, somewhere. Let me try to find out what happened to him.

So yeah. I am totally in favor of this committee because it can bring us so much benefits. Our good men here, though, seems to disagree. According to The Malaysian Insider, there was a proposal to form a similar committee, way back in 2005. However, the Mufti Council decided to reject the proposal as they claimed that it brings no benefits and would only bring losses to the Muslims.
I don’t know what losses they are talking about, but I can see a number of things to be gained.
1. Interfaith exchange allows Muslims to be seen as welcoming and curious for knowledge, removing the impression that we are aggressive, unapproachable and arrogant.
2. Interfaith exchange allows Muslims a better ground to explain common misconceptions – especially with regards to the syariah and hudud laws. Dispelling stereotypes is a major plus point, too.
3. Interfaith exchange allows Muslims to better understand and respect other religions. My experience taught me that if you first respect others, they will, in turn, respect you.
4. Interfaith exchange gives Muslims the opportunities to compare the virtues of our teachings. Sure, different religions might disagree on certain divine concepts – but let’s let God handle the divine things. For us, let’s learn the good things that each religion can teach to each other. For example, churches have effective and wholesome methods to involve youths and families in their religious activities – Muslims should learn a thing or two and bring more rempits, skinheads and punks back to the mosque!
5. Interfaith exchange allows more room for Muslims to do damage control in case more idiot radical Muslims decide to fuck up and do more idiotic nonsense. If shit happens (and I bet you it will) the committee can quickly and effectively gather, collaborate and find a solution that is peaceful and satisfies all sides.
I think the brighter and more edge-acated Muslims can come up with more elaborate gains, but other than allowing ourselves to be humble for once, I really fail to see any harm with this proposal. While Perkasa is out crying for blood and murder all over the place, I am curious to see how our tech-savvy, tweet-cheating Najib is going to walk this tightrope, so I posted the link on Facebook. I was simply expecting some LOLs and facepalms and maybe a snarky remark or two.
This is what I got instead.

Comedy gold, I tell you. Even so, I’m happy to say that couple of days ago, I found a shining ray of hope for us Malays. A clear, sober reminder of who we are and what we should stand for – not as the supreme group of people that we are, uh, led to believe we are – but as part of a huge, culturally rich, powerful and multi-layered community in this beautiful, colourful and aromatic country.
Benarlah kata Tun Mahathir Mohamad bahawa Melayu mudah lupa.

In an attempt to sound a bit more Malay, I shall lift a quote from a (terrible) Malay movie,
“Lu pikirlah sendiri.”
if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.

Always nice to read an opinion.
Wonder what others would say?
Huhuhuhu typical MELAYU! Because of some open discussion, he took it seriously.
Betapa kecil nye pemikiran org melayu ini. Sad, really sad.
If there were 1 mil others just like him this country will never grow. We still be waving keris and what not. HAHAHAHA!
This is awesome. I love reading your blatant opinions
Mind if I re-linked about this issue? :3
Silencers: Be my guest :)
As a soon-to-be migrant hailing from down South of Johor, I find the closed hearts a sign of uncompromise, a defence of the ivory tower, a guardian of what we already know is a rotten corpse, veiled with a beautiful skin. A W40K-esque mindset: either you’re with us, or against us.
For me, I really don’t know what to say about Malaysia: on one hand, they have done absolutely the impossible (no thanks to Tun Mahathir), yet the people are still not culturally evolved.
Granted Singapore is of similar cultural glut, but at least the Government is acknowledging it.
Anyways, as a Malay idiom would have it, “tawar hati,” nothing would change their fucking mindset.
Silencers: You’re migrating here? Do give me a hoot if you’re around KL :D
Dumb old faggot indeed. This kind of mentality that made us (the malay and muslim) look like a bunch of arrogant, bitchy group of people in denial. I mean you want people to understand us, see us as tolerate, but at the same time you bitch about how great you are, how you couldnt lower yourself to this bottom-feeding religious groups. I dont know why but you seen a little bit delusional and paranoid my datuk friend.
Inilah Melayu lupa daratan, lupa asal usul.
Silencers:
Inilah namanya Melayu paranoid, Melayu penakut.
is amused at how paranoid malay responds. At times I wonder, do they actually understand or even read these wall of texts?
Silencers, cakap memang senang, tuduh rasuah sini rasuah sana. Jangan cakap sebarangan ikut sedap mulut saja, nanti badan binasa.
Silencers: Ala, pura-pura tak baca berita pulak dia.
