Name My Partitions!

September 12th, 2007

I feel like going for a frappuccino with someone. But I don’t really play favourites with you people, so here’s a little game to help me decide :D

I just got myself a new harddisk, and it’s large enough to accommodate some big partitions, so I split it into four. All this while, I’ve had quite a few partitions which I simply named My Documents, My Music, My Videos, PC Games, Stash, and Anime, each serving its respective purposes. [Stash is where I toss used to toss in random stuff].

However, upon upgrading my system [I run a dual core now, I might blog about that some other time], I decided to reorganize and straighten things out, now that I have more room to move things around. I also took the liberty of renaming some of the older partitions.

Anyhow, after making the four new partitions, I’m fresh out of names. I could only come up with names of swords – which isn’t so bad if not for the fact that it stands out among the rest so much.

So, what I need you to help me out here with, is to come up with a set of four names that are relevant to each other, perhaps with a certain theme, and preferably names that don’t stand out too much compared to the other partitions. I honestly couldn’t think of any.

Can you? Winning entry gets a frappuccino treat at Starbucks!

Hmm… San Fran’s coffee are better. :P

All Divine Egyptian Themes:

Thoth – God of Knowledge
Seshat – Depicted as a scribe, Goddess of writing
Hathor – Goddess of Love/Music
Iusaaset- Considered a grandmother of the Gods.

Yes, names are inspired by your Egyptian travelogue pics. :P

Silencers: ! :D

Albert Ng says:

Installations
Junk
Keepers
Lab

It also helps when you’re doing a Sort By Name. I partition so that Keepers is write once read only (videos), Installations is for program files (write once read rarely), Lab is for project files (frequent read/write, and the first drive you should backup) and Junk for stuff you don’t need to backup.

Having such categories for partitions reduce disk fragmentation and increase speed. Notice how moving files out and back into a drive will defragment it.

Silencers: Hmm, so far, I’ve been tossing random junk into Balmung, storing downloaded software inside Excalibur, and the other two partitions are meant for massive video downloads. Will consider this set :D

decypher says:

How bout erm…

Fird says:

My Animes
My Other Stuffs

=D

Couldn’t help it. But why bother making so many partitions? Just keep one big one, saves trouble managing – especially when you need space lateron.

Silencers: As Albert mentioned, having partitions like that makes defragging/scanning and various maintenance jobs faster and more manageable.
It’s also a personal quirk. Thou shalt not deprive a geek [wannabe] of his quirks.

engz says:

1. keris
2. kerambit
3. sundang]
4. bladau

keris names =P hehehe

decypher says:

I second Fird’s suggestion… i mean keeping one big partition instead of many small ones.

You can manage your files in different folders instead of partitions.

Hœnir – For your Music / AMVs / MVideos
Kvasir – For Anime / Movies / TV Series
Týr – For your PC Games
Loki – For the OTHER *cough* items … i mean STASH

Norse based !

Heh. You can tell what anime I’m hooked to at the moment. If all else fails, just name them after sets of 4 characters in a fiction series of your liking or your favourite four ex-girlfriends.

Silencers: I can only do that *IF* I have four ex-girlfriends. I know the second set is Lucky Star, but what’s the first one?

Edo says:

Semag – Games
Tnemucod – Documents
Serutcip – Pictures
Rehto – Others

Just reversed, lol.

Silencers: Say it out loud, and it sounds like Murloc names, LOL.
