From the Australs

July 4th, 2007

Guess what?

Here I am, blogging from the Australs. Yes, I decided to go. Yes, I will be skipping a whole week of class. And I got suckered into it. It’s only been the second night, and I’m still quite oblivious as to what this whole thing really is about.

I’m practically surrounded by babes and booze. I was told about a lot of the things that I should be expecting. Debates [obviously], socials, lots of brainstorming and mindfucking. But above all else, probably the most important thing to note, is that everyone is capable of seeing two sides of coin.

In other words, morals have been completely thrown out the window. Morals is just a tool that is meant to be exploited on stage. Morals is just like a hammer, flip it on the blunt side to strike. Flip it to the claw side to pull out the nail.

It’s almost amazing how they can all freely bend themselves to suit their circumstances. The mental adaptability and versatility that these people exhibit are beyond anything I have ever imagined.

I think I’ll blog a bit more as time goes by. I’ve to sleep soon, got three rounds of debating to do. Wish me luck!

It’s expected. As for you, be steady, hold true.

P.S: God, doing another 24-hour marathon. Didn’t expect to start it so soon in the trimester. LOL.

Silly Pat says:

WOOT! GAMBA!

Also, am amused to see you gave in. XD

Yuhi says:

Enjoy your ONE WEEK OF NO CLASSES AND POTENTIAL BAR LIST

Good luck, and have fun. :3

As I reached Australs, I was like, “Wait… this sounds a tad familiar… OMG HE ACTUALLY WENT!” Do post your motion up when you have the time!

And here, take this; *gives bag* – that’s all the luck in the world in there.

Tristan says:

morals out the window huh… I guess this applies to both the debates (arguing against our principles) and the general drunken debauchery that goes on afterwards. In terms of the first one, I kinda think people often debate better when arguing against their principles, since they have to think through the causal arguments more clearly; people arguing for their beliefs often get too emotional and forget to explain their assumptions, since they presume their correctness is self-evident. Thus the worst debate I have ever seen was a very good and usually funny Communist debater make a mess of arguing for workers’ rights, since he got angry and spat alot.

On the second form of morals out the window… actually I thought the organisers were kinda lucky that everything ran so late, otherwise they woulda had a lot more debauchery on their hands.

At some point or other, I heard most aussy and kiwi teams complain that they never had time to get drunk before the social events. Last year, when they did have time, this meant vomiting all over carpets, much naked streaking through bars etcetera… somehow I don’t think this would go down quite as well in a predominantly Muslim nation, and might have seen a few end up in what Dan called the “Malaysian gulags”.

Silencers: Eh, when I mentioned morals out the window, I thought I made it clear that it was about the debate. Oh well, my bad :p But on your point, arguing against my own principles is probably the most difficult thing for me to do. Which might explain my losing streak, heh. In fact, I lost my first round against Victoria 3 because of that very reason. [Say hi to Kathy, Chris and Ihaiah for me would you?]

As far as the organisers were concerned, I thought it was weird how everyone peacefully accepted the lateness of things – especially when we get to see people struggling to use MS Excel, and a crappy projector at that.

Streaking? Vomiting all over carpets? As much as I’d like to see that – just for experience’s sake – I’d rather not have it happen here. Otherwise, I don’t think anyone would sponsor Malaysian universities to host another Australs ever again, hahaha. Especially since the sponsor this year were two major government ministries [of Higher Education and Women and Family Development].

Speaking of gulags, I think we got to see a leisurely camp of refugees on the first day when we were all waiting for our room keys, and on later days when everyone was lying around sleeping on the steps after lunch waiting for the next rounds, right?

Oh by the way, the latest feature article on Salient caught my eye. Mind if quote a few passages?

Tristan says:

yeah, I realised when I read back over yer post that the moral thing was directed at debating practice. I suppose vomiting is more a matter of presentation and dignity than morality… mwa ha.

And yes, please quote us, the more we are referenced the better! Yay for glory etcetera.

abudhabi says:

you know what, you lot just made a wholesome rambling or great nothings, if you’re not having enough fun, then find something better to do but please, these voices people are having enough fun as the go along, i mean cmon, whats got up your anus? dude, chill… not as if we are turning stupid, voices just happened to be rather indifferent, different people thinks differently. and yes if you might want to convert and preach, do it somewhere else where the world crave upon such great interpretation of something that holds truth and yet, we have no proof…so please stop blabbing about morality going out of the window..coz as you go on rambling your utterly perfected english without substance, you may as well just write a religious publication and get your own children to read them…jesus bless all of you!

Silencers: You might wanna think about what’s up your anus before even asking about what’s up mine.

Did you fail to understand that I’m actually PRAISING debaters? Or are you just too emotionally disturbed by a phrase as simple as ‘morals thrown out the window’. There is not a single shred of sarcasm in what I wrote, and apparently you are the only person yet to be, hahaha, anal about it. Morals out the window is how I’d describe a debate, and what makes it interesting – nothing high and mighty about that statement, no? Or are you too blinded by your own childish and impetuous half-baked sense of morality to see that?

I’ve got nothing against Voices people, man. They’re a merry bunch, and I like them. I honestly do. You’re just probably too stupid to realise that, not to mention your dumb usage of the word ‘indifferent’. Indifferent means they don’t give a shit, not about thinking differently or have different ways of thinking, dipshit.

But since you’re too stupid, and you write with crappy language [you asked for it], let me remind you that if anything, the people of Voices DO give a shit. They gave a shit about me, and they give a shit about each other. If I were to describe them, they’re the most caring bunch of people, and they’re anything BUT indifferent.

A simple phrase, and you’re flipped as if someone poked a hole in Noah’s ark. What’s up your anus dude? C’mon, chill. Nobody is turning stupid. Well maybe just you, I don’t know.

Disco says:

“They gave a shit about me, and they give a shit about each other.”

And i still give a shit and think you should keep on debating.

abudhabi says:

alamak dude…i think we failed to communicate to each other..im a supporter of voices in a lot of ways…i was commenting on the other’s comments, not on what you wrote..maybe i should’ve rephrased it to better suit the supportiveness of it..however..i got carried away being so mad at how voices was being judged..anyhow sorry mate..you know who i am and i say amen to that…just to put it where both of us can be civil…indifferent in a good way..i didn’t say indifferent meaning outcast, darling cools and chills:P

abudhabi says:

i wanna laugh, mUAHAHAHHAHA its funny, its like you thought i flamed you and i got flamed back…MAUAHAHAH

Silencers: Oh…kay. Now I’m just confused. Nor do I know who you are. But for peace’s sake, here’s a cookie. *hands you a cookie*

abudhabi says:

someone you met during australs and had a good chat with…thankiu for the cookie!
