Many friends of mine, especially the old ones, who have come across this blog have wondered aloud, how on earth did Fazri came to love writing in English so much? It’s not like I don’t understand their curiosity, actually. You see, I’m just an ordinary Malay boy, born in a Malay-majority neighbourhood, and brought up surrounded by the stereotypical Malay standards, lifestyles and habits.

I swear eloquently in Malay [try me!], and when I’m startled, I sometimes sputter out “Opocot mak kau meletup!” and stuff like that. A random guy on the street would easily say that I’m just like any other Malay guy you’ll ever meet. Really.

Even if I do love to write so much, it wouldn’t be so unnatural if I wrote in Malay. After all, it *is* my mother tongue, and it was the language I have spoken since the day I learned to talk. A very prententious and perpetually intellectual explanation to their curiosity would be that I think in English, instead of Malay. Don’t ask me why, though. I remember someone [was it you, Viewtru?] blogged about thinking in English as having less syllables compared to thinking in Malay.

Take for example, 2 + 4 = ?.

If you think in Malay, you’d be thinking “Dua, campur empat, jadi enam.”
In English, it would be “Two plus four is six.”

A simple calculation like that required ten syllables in Malay, whereas in English, it took only five. Just by thinking in a different language, I effectively increased my thought speed by 100%. A 100% increase in efficiency in no small deal - ask any DotA player if you don’t believe me.

Hehe, just kidding lah. Don’t take it too seriously, dumbass.

Anyway, that’s besides the point of this one blog entry. Back to the question of why I prefer writing in English, I think I can offer you an easier answer. Some smartass dude said “A picture is worth a thousand words.”, so just this once, I’ll buy his crap and let a simple photo give you some clues.

It’s a picture of something that contains tens of thousands of words.
Says quite a lot, huh? :D

Note: Yes, the thesaurus’ cover is very clean. Thanks for asking.
