Nineteen? Wow,…WOOO. Okay.

March 6th, 2007

You know, I don’t really mean to be a thorn in anybody’s sides, nor am I just a bunch of sour grapes. Just that, I find it extremely annoying, as well as extremely sad everytime I hear about a ridiculous amount of A’s scored during a major exam.

Nadiah Amirah, an 18-year-old from SM Tun Sardon is likely to get 19 1As in the examinations and replace Nur Amalina Che Bakri, who obtained 17 1As in 2004, as the country’s top scorer.

She took Bahasa Melayu, English, Modern Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Islamic Studies and English for Science and Technology.

Her other subjects were Principles of Accounting, Commerce, Basic Economy, Tasaur Islam, Al-Quran and Sunah Studies, Syariah Legal Studies, Pure Science, Geography and Literature.

Damn gao champion, right? Not. Isn’t that like, taking every goddamn available subject? You know, I personally think pulling off shit like this is completely pointless, and as an aspiring techie, I find it to be ridiculously inefficient.

I fail to see the logic behind taking more than 10 subjects, 5 core subjects [BM, English, Mod. Maths, History, Islam/Moral] and 5 electives which pretty describes your forté. Science subjects are for the scientific oriented dream, and likewise for the business subjects, and the same goes for the Islamic subjects.

By taking every goddamn available subject, it can only mean one of two things

  • She wants to inflate her ego
  • She feels EXTREMELY insecure of her own abilities

The world isn’t so unforgiving to the point that you have to be a master of everything. You want a scholarship, sure. I got a scholarship, but I didn’t even get 9 A1′s for my SPM. I was just too stupid to not keep it, but that’s a different story lar.

Sure, everyone’s gonna gawk at your 19 A1′s for a while, and then beyond that they’re gonna start looking for other qualities off the paper. Now, I’m not the one to be a judge of character, but as far as experience goes, you can’t get 19 A1′s without burying yourself in study – and sacrificing everything else.

Also, one doesn’t really need to be take every SPM subject to have all options available. The most versatile stream of all is Science. The logic is simple because science subjects requires one to exert one’s brain a lot more to come up with solutions to various problems, in comparison to other streams which requires strong memory and a bit creativity.

That’s why an science stream SPM leaver can take virtually any course in the university, science or not. That’s what we call efficiency. Efficiency is also when one realises that they have little or no interest in science, so they can take the business stream and take up non-scientific courses. See the simple logic there? There’s abso-fucking-lutely NO reason, to take ALL the subjects available.

For a top scorer since primary school, I’d be utterly surprised if she actually overlooked this simple equation. Either that, or she actually missed out on Life. Which is really sad, actually. Otherwise, she might be completely aware of the whole thing, but does it anyway, because it creates a sense of pride. Okay, I’m being nice.

She just wants an ego boost. And sacrificed a shitload of stuff for it.

Congratulations, Miss Expected-To-Get-19 A1′s! You are about to realise what sort of phailure you’ll turn out to be. Trust me, I’m speaking from experience.

On another note, I feel that it’s really sad when a person competency is measured by his SPM results. A majority of our school leavers don’t know who Mozart is, can’t tell the difference between a Penné and a Linguiné, fail to understand what kind of person a Don Juan is, and suck at teh internets. The self-worth of our school leavers have been depreciated so badly that only academics seem to matter.

I’d like a system that can recognise the other qualities of students, qualities non-academic, that is. Sure, he might not even get 6 A1′s, but hey, if he’s good at sports, schools should have a system that allows him to be good at it. If she’s good at cooking, there should be a system that allows her to expand her skill and be an awesome cook the moment she leaves school.

That way, she doesn’t have to waste time trying to learn accounting, or mass comm, or economics and shit that don’t build upon her best skills. A sports SPM leaver can take up sports science and be a coach, a home economics SPM leaver can take up baking, or hotels, whatever that course you call it, and work as a chef or start her own bakery.

There’s so many other career options that requires skills NOT offered in SPM subjects. Shouldn’t we try to open up opportunities for our kids to build upon these other overlooked skills, too?

agreed….wat happened to the past (so)high top scorers?

no news. probably regreting and wondering why they took up so many subjects

the society already trying not to focus on the “A” culture but still they want to chase on such thing

dunno the news report is trying to make the girl look like a fool or the other way

my 2 cents

I don’t get it. I find it ridiculous.

It’s either the kids are getting smarter, or the education system in msia is deteriorating.

Who knows, she really enjoys studying, and it’s her passion. Let’s say she’s offered a scholarship in Oxford or anything equivalent, I hope that she won’t run away from daddy and mummy few years later coz of pressure and high expectations. (It happened before to a Malaysian kid right?)

What’s next, STPM?

Silencers: I can’t shake the feeling that we’ll see 10 A’s for UPSR soon enough.

u know, good for her that she so called, broke d record for d number of a’s.. i applaud her hard work and determination.. or her incredible ability to spot the weakness/loophole in the education system that makes our education system seem like a 2 bit ho..

perhaps she needs an ego boost, perhaps she doesn’t know wat she wanna do.. its the kiasu mentality for her to take 19 subjects.. anyway u look at it, she’s brilliant, for watever reasons, to be driven to score a’s in them.. now that said, this makes our education system seem like a joke, although it is quite evident that it is a joke. people since our generation can testify to the fact that during our time, and even now, there is no proper yardstick implemented in our education system that stays static. every year, somebody decides to change by adding/dropping/adjusting the syllabus to cater to the ‘younger’ generation, making them seem like a special lot who are getting smarter, which in fact, actually, is making them abuse the system even easier..(e.g. wtf did they allow her to take pure science, when she already took chem, bio n physics?.. goblok)

really, just ask yourself, for the subject’s u scored A in SPM, did u really learned anything other than how to score? as in, there is no appreciation for the subject, just taught how to score in exams.. that’s the way i view SPM was like for me..

IMHO, our education system has always been a joke since 2 years before our time, when they kicked out the aggregate system.. seems every year, there are more holidays then the previous year, rendering teachers to rush thru syllabus, to a point where in government schools, they just don’t care anymore,.. everything is tuition, tuition, tuition (at least during my time).. i sincerely believe that the education system must be revamped dramatically to ensure there is quality, not quantity in the “A” grade students receive in government exams..

then again, if she doesn’t know what she can do with her 19 A’s, she can always be like that girl that endorses merchandise like astro n motivational tapes.. wat it all comes down to anyway, is to be able to generate income for one self.. crude as it may sound, that’s all that matters anyway, isn’t it? kudos to the ministry of education for allowing such thing to happen in bolehland.. msia boleh..

Silencers: Ouch, that’s gotta hurt, lol.

Since you mentioned merchandise endorsing, Staedtler, Papermate and Faber Castell instantly came to mind…

Shahrul says:

I have a good source stating that someone in charge of the education system, wants Malaysians to stay stupid and “akur” (im paraphrasing here). They even said that, if we Malaysians get smarter we would rebel (not so much as to rebel, but make better complaints to the proper medium I would suspect, rather than our Malaysians now that only complain at “Kopitiam” shops).
