The Breakfast Club

January 4th, 2007

Last night, I attended a play [much thanks to Albert and Grace for inviting me!] at Wisma Tun Sambanthan, and I must say it was a very pleasant surprise.

The Breakfast Club is a play based on the 1985 movie of the same title. Now, I don’t watch plays that often but I kind of understand quite a lot of things about watching plays and being in a play [having acted in a few plays myself]. I decided to go there as an audience, and not a photographer to fully appreciate the experience so I left the cam at home hence no picture for this post [sorry, Grace!].

Regardless, it’s a play worth an honourable mention. It’s got wonderful actors who played their roles beautifully and elegantly. I don’t feel the need to reword the synopsis of the story so I guess I’ll just lift it from Wikipedia;

The plot follows five students at fictional Shermer High School as they report for Saturday detention. Complete strangers, the five teenagers are all from a different clique or social group. Claire (“The Princess”) is a wealthy spoiled girl who’s in trouble for skipping school to go shopping; Andrew (“The Athlete”) is varsity wrestler who has been sent to detention for playing a humiliating prank on another student; Brian (“The Brain”) is a nerdy kid that was punished for bringing a flare gun to school in a parasuicidal gesture that accidentally discharged in his locker, causing minor property damage; Bender (“The Criminal”) is a troublemaker who continually causes problems at school (it is suggested that this particular detention is for pulling the fire alarm, but it is not definite as it is implied that it isn’t unusual for him to be there); and Allison (“The Basketcase”) claims that she has shown up because she has nothing better to do that day…

Storyline is, of course, predictable if not already known. Despite that fact, they made use of not only the stage, but the entire auditorium as part of their set which made it very very interesting. Sound and lighting was done with excellent coordination and portrayed the mood just the way it should be. I strongly urge you to go and watch!

Oh, and visit the official site for more details!

I had no idea you were in plays.

Silencers: When I say plays, I meant school/university plays. Not ‘actors studio’ kind of plays.
