I’ve been wearing a pair of rimless spectacles for almost two already and have this to say about it. It totally, completely, unmistakably, definitely sucks. At least, mine was. Mine is a single-screw mount frame. Which means the lenses are attached to the frame by only one screw on each end. This means, if that screw is loose, your lens will swing around, dangling on the frame. And that kind of shit has happened to me countless times for the past two years and I’m fucking sick of it.
So last week, I went to local optometrist to get myself a new pair, since it’s already been two years since my last optical check-up. Of course, I intended to rid myself of that fucked up pair of spectacles I mentioned earlier. The results were pleasing as I was told that there was no need change in lens power.
I browsed around the shelves and I was interested in a pair of half-rimmed frames. It was quite pricey though, but I did manage to get a discount for it. Don’t ask me how :p it’s a skill passed on to me by my mom. So anyway, I was thinking of getting myself a dark green and black tinted pair of lenses to go with it. It was then I realized that in a dark lecture, I wouldn’t be able to see much should I don those tints. Before getting the rimless, I was conned [long story, too lazy to tell] into getting a pair of frames that have those little magnets to be used with clip-on polarisers. Those were pretty damned fussy and at one point those polarisers broke in two at the bridge. Worthless pieces of shits.
And my mind crossed upon the not-so-new entry of lenses that can change change its tint depending on the surrounding light conditions. To which I inquired the shop, and they told me about the things called Transition Lenses. It seems they’re just regular lenses ingrated with some particles that are sensitive to UV light. The attendant pulled out a sample just to show me.
They take about 3 seconds to go from dark to clear and likewise. However, they don’t get as dark as polarised lenses you would get on shades [about 85% opacity], and they don’t get as clear as regular lenses [about 95% clarity]. They’re very expensive, as I got my pair of transitions for RM400, lenses alone.
I chose a nice hot sunny afternoon [today] to go pick up the glasses. I gave it a shot, and tried it on outside before paying for them. True enough, I can’t sense the lenses turning dark, so under the bright sunlight, I took them off just to see if there was any difference and WHAM, my eyes hurt like hell. I was pleasantly surprised by this effect and paid off the rest of the bill.
They really mean what they say when they said I would only sense comfortable vision, because that’s the only thing I felt, lol. Things don’t get as dark as shades would and the transition from clear to dark is virtually unnoticeable. When I got home, I Googled to see just how do these things work. It seems the photochromatic particles inside the lenses works as a function of UV intensity and is reflected into the lens opacity. Which simply means the higher amount of UV exposed will make the lens turn darker and likewise.
What surprised me more were the consumer testimonials of the Transitions on blogs and health forums. It seems that there are plenty of people who dislike the Transitions for reason that they don’t get as dark as they hoped and that they take longer than expected to turn dark. However those were testimonials were almost year ago and I was told earlier that mine was the latest edition where they improved upon those kind of feedback.
Maybe it’s my own excitement of landing myself yet another new ‘toy’ but quite frankly I’m starting to like my new transition lenses. I’ll give it a few months to see if it really sucks as these people say. Are you wearing a pair of transitions as well? What do you think about it?
